Host Logs

The host sends its logs to Computle automatically, so support can usually see them without asking. This page is for when support asks for the files from the workstation.

By default the host writes no log files on the workstation. To write them, turn on local logging:

  1. Open an administrator command prompt.

  2. Turn local logging on.

    reg add HKLM\SOFTWARE\Computle\Remotle\Log /v LocalLogging /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
  3. Restart the workstation.

Each host process reads the setting when it starts.

  4. Reproduce the problem.

Log files are then written to:

Folder Contents
C:\ProgramData\Computle\Remotle\Logs\<YYYY-MM-DD>\ One file per component per process, named <Component>_<HHMMSS>.log. A new folder starts at midnight.
C:\ProgramData\Computle\CrashDumps\ Crash dumps, readable by administrators only
%TEMP%\ComputleRemotleHost-<version>-setup.log The install log

The Logs folder is kept under 5 GB. The oldest files are removed first.

Send the logs to support

  1. Right-click C:\ProgramData\Computle\Remotle\Logs and choose Compress to ZIP file.

If support asked for crash dumps, compress C:\ProgramData\Computle\CrashDumps as well.

  2. Send the ZIP file to support with the workstation name, the date and time of the problem, and what you were doing.

  3. Turn local logging off again once support has what it needs.

    reg add HKLM\SOFTWARE\Computle\Remotle\Log /v LocalLogging /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

Every host process logs to the system journal:

journalctl -u computle-hostd
journalctl -u computle-host-updated
journalctl --user -u computle-session

To write log files as well, set LocalLogging = 1 under [Log] in /etc/computle/host.conf, then restart computle-hostd and sign in again. Files are written to /var/log/computle/<YYYY-MM-DD>/, one per component per process.

Send the logs to support

  1. Export the journal and the log folder.

    sudo journalctl -u computle-hostd -u computle-host-updated --since "-2 days" > ~/computle-host.log
    sudo tar -czf ~/computle-logs.tar.gz /var/log/computle ~/computle-host.log
  2. Send computle-logs.tar.gz to support with the workstation name, the date and time of the problem, and what you were doing.
